I start all my beginners with a strong set of fundamental practices, from breathing techniques and games to lip slurs and articulations. I find that the best way to motivate a student to practice and learn is to play music that they know. I teach beginning and intermediate students out of the Walter Beeler method, which provides a good progression of theory along with recognizable music. No two students are the same, and I try to take each student's strengths, goals and preferences into account when designing their custom curriculum. For brass, I devise custom exercises for the player in addition to using classic pedagogical texts such as the Arban's and Clarke books. For piano, I start students off with a combination of scale work and repertoire. All lessons with me will include learning a wide variety of repertoire as well as a fair bit of improvisation, as I believe it is an invaluable tool for developing ears, creativity and musical personality. Although it is important that my students progress at their own pace, I suggest practicing as many 20 minute sessions possible daily, for research has shown that the mind can concentrate most clearly for that length of time.
