In 2016, I graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education and was also awarded a Trombone Performance Certificate. I have been fortunate to be able to study abroad in Ireland and perform with multiple bands and orchestras at Maynooth University and around the Kildare County area. Then, depending on age and experience, I build a custom program for the student, which may include using various books, resources, and even materials which I have created. For beginners, I like to start with the basic fundamentals of the instrument. Brass instruments are notoriously demanding, so making sure we have a solid grasp on the fundamentals is paramount. I like to start with the Essential Elements for Band and the Elementary Method for Cornet and Trumpet books. Once we have the fundamentals, I like to start introducing some solo pieces, jazz, and pop tunes that will allow the student to get a feel for all the music they can play on this instrument! When taking on beginner students, I typically use a blend of method books and novice musical pieces to begin to build musicianship. With intermediate musicians, I tend to seek out anything of interet to the student while incorporating harder repertoire to strengthen musicianship and to continue to peek interest in music.
