I now teach music at the Boston Higashi School for students with Autism. I am still playing my trombone as well as teaching private lessons and I plan to give some recitals next year. I am also pursuing my other interests such as teaching ballroom dance. For beginning students who are children, I typically begin with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements; as well as other, more auditory practices that do not require a book. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce other solo repertoire pieces that I feel the student is ready for, and assist in musical execution for future recitals. Upon first meeting me students I like to do an informal lesson to evaluate where they are in terms of technique on their instrument, knowledge of music fundamentals (harmony, theory and rhythm). All of my students follow more or less a similar path that deviates a bit once they have developed some. No matter the age I start all students off with building fundamentals of tone, flexibility, articulation, and range. I use a combination of exercises from David Vining, UNC's own Buddy Baker, and Emory Remington. While building fundamental playing skills I will have students begin playing etudes. Younger students will start in their band method books, but as time goes on they will transition into Rochut's Melodious etudes, and the Rubank method books. Read More
