Older students will also play from Rochut's Melodious etudes and the Rubank Advanced methods. With older students I also like to transition into some more challenging arenas such as the Blazhevitch books. Any advanced students who want to focus on jazz will be using the Jazz Conception Method. Beyond lesson and etude books, all students will, as part of their lessons, have required listening assignments to further build and conceptualize our ideas of good playing. Read More

Upon first meeting me students I like to do an informal lesson to evaluate where they are in terms of technique on their instrument, knowledge of music fundamentals (harmony, theory and rhythm). At the beginning of each lesson I believe it's important to talk about what each student has been able to work on from the lesson before and each lesson ending in goals we would like to accomplish for the next meeting. I am a life long lover of music and have played violin and piano since the age of 5 and began trombone in 5th grade school band. I fell in love with the trombone and love to keep up with my other instruments, I also love to arrange and compose music. I love sharing my love of music with others and watching children blossom into their musical selves is always a great journey. Read More

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. Read More

Each lesson is a space and time for musical exploration/ discovery, experiment, and expression. Most importantly it is a place where students can learn more about themselves, life, and what kind of musicians/artist that they would like to become. The students, parents, and I set goal based on each individual student's musical interest and needs. Every artist is on their own journey. I as the teacher is with the students, there to guide them and help them on their journey where I am learning just as much or more. Read More

It depends on the age of the student, but there are plenty of method books and pieces that can both teach a student music theory and notation, as well as their performance skill. With beginners its perfect to start with the Rubank series from Beginner-Intermediate. Many students are given the "Standard of Excellence" series by their school teacher and that series works as well. I believe these books are a great start, but can get old fast. Read More
