For beginning students I would begin with a basic introduction of the instrument and its history. I believe that each instrument has a story to tell! I use a basic book such as Hal Leonard's Essential Elements or whatever material the student's band director is using. Flexibility is the key. Playing an instrument should be fun and that is certainly a goal for students of all ages. Practice is the key to success for beginners or more advanced players. Read More

For beginner students I like to start away from books and notation and work on sound production and call and response. This is a way to get the ear working and to have some fun with potentially the most daunting part of learning an instrument. Once we have mastered that we move to writen notation and try to match what we have been doing without the book. When a student has progressed towards a good understanding of music notation I will encourage solo repertoire and other projects that are of interest of the students based upon a common goal we have set for our time together.
