I want to know what inspires my students and what they strive for as well, though it's always okay if they can't answer that immediately. Learning an instrument is a journey. I believe that the most important part of my teaching style is positive reinforcement. I'm a dedicated music educator that wants to help students bring out their full potential on their instrument. In 2018, I graduated from Baylor University with a Bachelor of Music Education. While at Baylor, I was a member of the trombone studio under Brent Phillips. I played in all the instrumental ensembles avaliable to play in as a trombonist. I also studied piano as my secondary instrument in college. I always try to ask the student what the scene of a movie would be if they are playing the soundtrack, and get them to convey that when they play. I earned Bachelor's and Master's degrees in 2008 and 2009 in Euphonium Performance and Music Education from the University of North Texas while studying with the renowned Dr. Brian Bowman. While there, I advanced to the final round of a United States Navy Band audition. From 2010-2019, I served as a band director in three different school districts in Texas; now I teach private lessons full-time in the North Dallas area. Once the student has advanced to where I can see that they have a good grasp of the fundamentals of the instrument, that is typically when I begin to introduce solo repertoire and supplement with my own material. I tend to push students to learn jazz, as its the basis for all drum set playing, but know that most kids are more interested in other more modern styles and accommodate them accordingly. Encouraging them to share with their families what they are working is always a good way to assure that they'll have a good support system throughout, which normally gets them more motivated to improve. Making sure they are having a good time throughout our lesson and during their practice times is key.
