I use a variety of different methods and I tailor my curriculum to each individual student, offering you a personalized approach that is unique to your personality and learning style. I teach repertoire from the Suzuki Violin School and Barbara Barber's Solos for Young Violinists, I also like to incorporate other styles if the student is interested, such as fiddle and bluegrass, and even pop and Disney songs. I also use etude and scale books to help build and enhance certain techniques, such as Wolfhart Etudes, Barber Barber Scales for Young Violinist, Carl Flesch Scale System, etc., depending on the level and individual needs of the student. My teaching philosophy revolved around the idea that music should be fun and engaging. While many teachers start their students off by learning how to read music, I like to begin with actually playing and familiarizing yourself with the instrument and later translating that information to written music notation. In your first lesson, we will play the instrument and learn a simple tune based on your skill level. I like to take into account the students music preference and learn what specifically they want to get out of private lessons. Read More

Numerous violin teachers make one of two mistakes. Many give their students too little information, leaving the student to figure out the finer technical details on their own, while others feed the student too much information without breaking it down for them. In both cases the student progresses at a slower pace and is likely to become frustrated. My approach is much more step-by-step oriented, allowing the student to fully grasp a concept over the course of one lesson as opposed to several lessons, which results in significantly greater progress over time. Eventually, a students love for the violin will naturally lend itself to a desire for further violin instruction. Students who desire violin instruction progress the fastest. I give students the amount of instruction and new information that I believe they can handle but that will also help them progress as rapidly as possible without overloading them. Focus on technique: Over the past few years, I have been learning that there are key violin playing technique principles that many teachers and violinists do not understand. Read More

I love to ask questions about the student's thought process, and you will commonly see me "break down" technique into smaller, more digestable pieces. I will also take the time to discuss the musical setting of the piece to give the performance more context. For example, did you know that Mozart's Violin Sonata No. 21 in e minor was written around the time his mother passed, and is the only instrumental piece he wrote that rests in e minor? Read More
