I started teaching violin and guitar lessons in high school and was fortunate enough to have had students throughout college on a much wider array of instruments. Lately, since Ive begun teaching from my home studio in Leicester, NC, Ive also been able to hone my skills as a performer in the diverse music scene that flourishes in these mountains. Because of this my teaching has grown to embrace and celebrate the improvisational and communal aspects of folk music as well as the rigorous, methodical approach to technique and theory that I learned as a classically trained violinist. I think teaching the methods- the scales techniques in music, the grammar and figures of speech in language is so helpful, because as well as not missing things out, the student is given a logical way of perceiving the subject which s/he can slot into her brain. For students who are children, I have a vareity of teaching style opportunities including the Suzuki Method, Essential Elements, Janice Rhoda's Complete Techniques, and other teaching methods. All of my students recieve education in music theory, rhythm, aural skills (voice/ear lessons), performance techniques, sight reading, and of course intrument technique. I believe the best teaching method is one that focuses on the accomplishments of each student. I have several different rewards systems that I will use to motivate students to practice at home. Part of this system is encouraging my students to set their own realistic goals and walking them through how to reach them. My teaching experience dates back to high school. I was a student leader in the marching band, serving as the woodwind captain for the marching band and the senior student conductor for the concert bands. With these positions, I was able to tutor peers and work on expanding my knowledge of teaching music.
