I believe the best teaching method is one that focuses on the accomplishments of each student. I have several different rewards systems that I will use to motivate students to practice at home. Part of this system is encouraging my students to set their own realistic goals and walking them through how to reach them. Depending on the instrument, I like to start working from a variety of traditional methods to get started. In the past, Ive preferred the Hal Leonard and Mel Bay series as a basis for learning piano, guitar, and banjo and for violin students- the Suzuki method (although I am not specifically a Suzuki teacher) followed by a prescribed series of etude books. Of course, this is helpful stuff for building a good, universal technical ability but I believe it is also important for a student to multi-task learning music that personally inspires them and that they can eventually perform with others. I believe a good musical day is enjoyed through a well-balanced musical diet! I love to keep the fundamentals in mind with scales and etudes fit for the student's skill level, and leverage those through a performance piece of choice, be it mine or yours (with blessings). If we are working towards a specific piece for a recital or a judge, I will tailor assignments to the piece. I believe that music should be fun. I think students are more engaged and willing to practice when they are actually enjoying what they are learning, and music is an amazing thing, so it should be engaging! I am a lighthearted and easy going teacher, and I am also experienced in many different areas of music. This allows me to really tailor my lessons to my students needs.
