As a believer in the "magic" of positive reinforcement, I don't see any other way in encouraging my students to make progress. During a lesson, we first review material that was assigned to practice from the previous lesson. Clear instruction on how to make progress is given, as well as practice goals for the next lesson. Then, it's time for new material! At the end of each lesson, we write down practice goals in a notebook the student keeps. Read More

I have had plenty of experience teaching both privately and in a classroom setting. I began teaching private lessons on the piano and violin in high school, where I mainly had elementary school beginners. In college, I continued to teach private lessons and also had plenty of opportunities to work with students of all different ages and skill levels in a variety of settings. I took plenty of college level courses on education and music and eventually completed my student teaching in a middle and high school orchestra classroom. Read More

Depending on the instrument, I like to start working from a variety of traditional methods to get started. In the past, Ive preferred the Hal Leonard and Mel Bay series as a basis for learning piano, guitar, and banjo and for violin students- the Suzuki method (although I am not specifically a Suzuki teacher) followed by a prescribed series of etude books. Of course, this is helpful stuff for building a good, universal technical ability but I believe it is also important for a student to multi-task learning music that personally inspires them and that they can eventually perform with others. For students who are children, I have a vareity of teaching style opportunities including the Suzuki Method, Essential Elements, Janice Rhoda's Complete Techniques, and other teaching methods. All of my students recieve education in music theory, rhythm, aural skills (voice/ear lessons), performance techniques, sight reading, and of course intrument technique. Children are very different from each other, and all of them learn in very different ways. My personal teaching style is whatever helps the student learn best. Read More
