I'm a classically trained violinist, with a Cajun Louisiana fiddling background. In the third grade, I began playing violin for orchestras in New Orleans, Louisiana and later had the wonderful opportunity to be a part of the New Orleans Creative Center for the Arts. Working within the Suzuki method, I start each student out with working on posture, technique, and the fundamentals of the violin before moving on to reading/playing. It is crucial to develop good technique/posture before moving on to reading! Once this is established, it is pretty smooth sailing from there. I started teaching violin and guitar lessons in high school and was fortunate enough to have had students throughout college on a much wider array of instruments. Lately, since Ive begun teaching from my home studio in Leicester, NC, Ive also been able to hone my skills as a performer in the diverse music scene that flourishes in these mountains. Because of this my teaching has grown to embrace and celebrate the improvisational and communal aspects of folk music as well as the rigorous, methodical approach to technique and theory that I learned as a classically trained violinist. Having grown up the second oldest of five siblings, I understand how to relate to other people and work with them even in difficult situations. For beginning students, I start with the Essential Elements book. If the student has already taken lessons or is in their school band/orchestra, I encourage moving onto the Rubank Elementary, Intermediate, and Advanced method books depending on ability. Once a student has proven that they are able to handle it, I will start on solo repertoire.
