Overview:
Saxophonist, recording artist, performer & teacher.  Lawrence is a unique and dynamic musician/performer who specializes in improvisation.  His inventive and soulful approach to saxophone performance makes him a sought after session player for some of LA's most respected indie artists(listen to a sample of his saxophone work on the attached video link at 5:10).  He holds an Associate of Arts degree in Music from Los Angeles Harbor College, having studied under the revered tv/film composer/arranger Ken Miller.  Lawrence has studied and performed in a diverse range of musical styles including Classical, Jazz, Reggae, Rock, Punk and Experimental.  He currently resides in the East Village Arts District of Long Beach where his home studio is located.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience dates back to my days at Los Angeles Harbor College, where I tutored in music theory and musicianship, as well as offered private lessons in saxophone and piano.  In 2007 I helped create and coordinate a successful afterschool music program at Wilmington Middle School for the Boys and Girls Club of Los Angeles.  We developed and implemented a program that offered group and private lessons in various instruments, music theory and musicianship.  The students formed original bands and developed repertoire, leading to performances and recitals.  I have a strong and natural affinity for teaching, and am always working on improving and refining my approach.  I've been working in special education for the last 8 years, and have used music in therapeutic settings.  I am flexible and adaptable and am open to working with students of all ages!  Along with focusing on rudiments, technique, breathing and posture, I emphasize the importance of developing one's own unique voice through their instrument.  And most importantly, having fun!
METHODS USED
For beginning students who are children, I begin with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements for band.  As the student progresses and builds a stronger foundation, I will start introducing solo repertoire.  Lessons cover all aspects of playing, including posture, breathing, theory, reading, performance, style and improvisation.  I gear my teaching approach to the pace and interests of the student.  Other materials I use are Universal Method for Saxophone - Paul Deville, as well as fake books and real books.  I supplement lessons with music theory and ear training, and encourage students to choose songs/pieces of their favorite artists to learn.  When teaching adults, I start by finding out what their particular interests and goals are, keeping that a focus, while supplementing with rudiments and fundamentals.  I encourage students to develop good practice habits to ensure consistency and proficiency.  I help students set realistic goals and achieve them.  I emphasize the importance of developing one's own unique voice through their instrument.
LESSON STYLE
I believe that every student is unique in their own way and my teaching style is reflected by that.  We are all capable of creating from that special place within ourselves, and bringing it to life through our instruments and self expression.  My approach is catered to the individual's needs and interests.  I help the student discover, nurture and put to use their own creative voice.
