Overview:
I am a professional violist with years of experience both in the United States and abroad. I began studying with Dr. David Dalton, a student of the great William Primrose. During my undergraduate work I was given the opportunity to study in Salzburg, Austria at the Mozarteum. When I was a senior in college I traveled to Germany to perform Don Giovanni, and Hansel and Gretel with students and professionals from around the world. Immediately after graduation I performed alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the HitRECORD fall formal. Later that year I accepted a full scholarship to attend the University of Michigan to study with another student of Primrose, and a well-known performer, Yitzhak Schotten. While there, I was also awarded the Graduate Student Instructor position and taught several courses. I am now a member of the Fort Wayne Philharmonic and enjoy playing professionally as well as teaching from my home in Lakewood, Ohio.
EXPERIENCE
I love teaching and know what it takes to keep kids motivated and engaged in music. In addition, I know what it takes to turn a passion into a career. My students have received music scholarships from many universities and have continued their musical journey long after they leave my studio. I work with both the parents and the students to show them how many opportunities there are in music and that it does not have to be just a hobby. However, for students that do not wish to pursue music professionally, I realize it is also a wonderful and beneficial hobby. The lessons we learn in music, whether it be attention to detail, the ability to push yourself to achieve more than you thought possible, or just the discipline it takes to hone a skill consistently, are lessons that stay with you for the rest of your life. I have taught everything from preschool aged children to retired adults. I enjoy all students no matter their age, skill and goals.
METHODS USED
My methods are extremely varied and depend on the students wants and needs. I am trained in the Suzuki method as well as Paul Roland's approach to music education and am comfortable implementing both into my teaching along with various others. I do not, however, generally stick to just one method as I have observed it generally does not give the student a rounded musical education. I was the first musician in my family and I therefore know how intimidating it can be for families like mine that have a limited knowledge of the music world and the opportunities therein. I therefore work closely with parents to ensure everyone is on the same page and we are giving the student the best chance at achieving their goals.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style, like the methods I use, varies with each student. Some students need a lot of structure and a clear plan on what to practice, when to practice, how long to practice and what the goal of each practice should be. On the other hand, some students-especially my advanced students- know exactly what to do to meet their goals and my expectations each week. I therefore will allow them to create and use their own routine. I begin each student by assessing their goals. If an older student comes to me with the goal of being a professional musician, my approach to their lessons and my expectations are going to be very different than with a 4 year old trying the violin for the very first time. Regardless of age, each student will walk away from each lesson with a clear knowledge of what to practice and more importantly HOW to practice to meet their goals.
