I tend to stress fundamentals when it comes to what my philosophy of teaching is. I argue that the more time is spent on fundamentals, the better technique the student will have later on. I started playing guitar at age 13 and by age 16 I was already teaching lessons! My martial arts instructor told me his daughter wanted to learn guitar and she became my first student. Every week I arrived early to martial arts and I taught her guitar for 1 hour. I work each week to plan out how best to convey the information needed, but if things need to change in the lesson, I adapt to provide what is needed for the student to still grow. Technique as well as theory are equally important. It is also important to have fun while learning. I like to use the Hal Leonard lesson books combined with excersises that I have created. I can also teach songs requested by students and explain and demonstrate how theory and technique apply to the tune.
