I have taught guitar and saxophone for about seven years, both privately and for retailers. I have taught students ranging in age from 7 to 60, and from beginners to experienced musicians wanting to learn a new instrument. I enjoy watching my students grow and also myself learning a few things along the way.
For beginning students, I typically start with a basic methods book for their instrument, for example: Standard of Excellence Band Method. Method books like this are great to enforce the basics of their instrument while working with the basics of music theory. I also like to use music theory websites to teach students more in-depth information about how music works: how to read, notate, identify, etc. Once the student is comfortable enough on the basics and is ready to move on, he or she will be introduced to learning solo repertoire and more advanced music excerises that will benefit him or her in case of future auditions and recital performances. For more developed students, they will work on advanced etudes, scale excerises, and solo reporitoire to futher their musician skills.
There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a student progress and develop as a musician! In order for students to be successful they need to be encouraged and challenged throughout their musical studies. In order to do this, it is important to focus on the fundamentals of the instrument, as well as music that peeks the interest of the student. By having a mixture of fundamentals and music the students truly enjoys, they become driven and self-motivated. I also think it is key to acknowledge the accomplishments of my students! I hope to learn as much from teaching my students as they learn from my teaching.
All people progress at different paces but if the subject is interesting and there is no pressure or judgement and pleanty of encouragement, then there will be progress and that is our objective. Music is all around us. Movies, elevators, stores. You can hear music in the waves in the ocean and the breeze in the trees. There are many studies that relay various benifits of learning an instrument. I have met many good people that I am still friends with through playing that I would not have if it were not for music.
I am a fairly new teacher but since completing my degree in May of 2015 I have already began to build a private studio as well as teach at a few local music schools. I believe that in order to truly understand an instrument, practice must take place nearly everyday. In lessons, I teach students how to practice by creating short goals that add up to long-term progress. For younger students, I find it helpful to treat these goals as games in order to make practicing feel fun as opposed to feeling like work. I also believe that students of all levels should be performing regularly so that all of their practicing is going towards something that they can be proud of.

The saxophone is a fairly durable instrument and can be a great instrument for a young player. However, the student does need to be big enough to hold the instrument and have the lung capacity to create quality tone. New players should start on alto sax.
Each teacher has his or her own style; but, as a new saxophone player, you can expect to learn about music theory and reading. Other topics covered in a lesson will likely include: instrument care, hand position and dexterity, correct breathing and embouchure formation, and tips for developing a beautiful sound in all registers.
In-home saxophone lessons are a convenient option for improving your musical skills. In-home lessons are virtually the same in every aspect as lessons taught in a studio. You can let Musika know what days and times work best and the teacher will arrange to teach lessons in your home for the same price as in-studio lessons.
For a beginning player, we would recommend renting a Jupiter, Yamaha, or Selmer saxophone. Sax students will also need to purchase reeds to play on their instrument. For new players a softer reed is more appropriate. The strength of a reed is measured on a scale from 1-4 with 1 being the softest and 4 being the hardest. We recommend starting with a Rico brand 1.5 or 2 reed, however, students should meet with their teacher first before buying reeds in bulk.
Many of our adult saxophone students are complete beginners, while others are former saxophonists now returning to an old hobby. We also have students who are more advanced and are looking improve their skills in both in any genre will find our network of instructors are enthusiastic about their style of choice. Ted S. is teaching clarinet to one of my children, and piano to two others. He is extremely knowledgeable, and very encouraging. His teaching methods are keeping my children enthused about their lessons, and without that, you have nothing. Two of my children were taking piano lesson from another teacher for the past year, and not progressing. Ted has been able to evaluate their skills individually, determine what was missing in their music education, and begin again with some early basics they seem to have missed. I am convinced we are finally moving forward, and am very happy about that. I wish I would have made this change much earlier.

My 4 year old son is quite energetic. Another piano teacher tried to teach him before Peter and could not get my son to listen to him at all. That teacher told me that my son had no interest and that we needed to wait before having my son take lessons. Peter started teaching my son a few weeks later. He quickly developed a great rapport with my son. I was astounded when my son sat down and listened to Peter during the first lesson. Peter has remarkable patience and is a natural working with children. He knows when to follow the child's lead. My son is very interested in how the piano works, so Peter takes the time to teach him about this. He is able to use my son's interests (superheroes, Lego, Star Wars, etc.) to refocus him back to playing the piano. Between lessons, he brainstorms on how he can teach my son better. For example, my son was playing the notes, but not understanding rhythm, so Peter looked into it and came back the next week with a new plan which helped. My son looks forward to his lesson every week. When he hears the doorbell ring on lesson day, he exclaims, "Yay! Peter's here!"

I really like her. And as an adult student, a good teacher who keeps the pace up but still keeps it reasonable in terms of difficulty is really hard to find. thank you musika and ed. I never thought of looking for an in-home lesson until I found musika. I have absolutely no hesitation that Ed is beyond capable. He's even offered to meet us at a music store to purchase the correct fitting instrument. how fabulous is that! We've also decided to extend the lesson time from 30 to 45 minutes. All this and just one lesson under our belt. He quickly understood where my daughter is at in level and her style of music. I'm thrilled as can be.

Mike has been working with my son Robert for over a year and has just started working with my daughter Kate. Mike is both a great musician and a good teacher. He connects with the kids and keeps them engaged. He is able to tailor the lesson to focus on music that is interesting to each child. He also encourages the students to participate in a public setting which is great. I would highly recommend Mike.

Dave is a fantastic teacher. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to students that I think is invaluable. At the same time, this does not limit him from working with beginning students. He is very communicative with the parents as far as schedule changes. We are so grateful to have found him!!
Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.Ok
