I like to mix technique with songs and styles of music the student is interested in so they get a full understanding of why technique is important and how it applies to songs and musical selections that are of interest to the student. In 2007, I graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Science in Music Education. I was a member of the Penn State Marching Blue Band and have participated in several Alumni Blue Band performances since graduating. I went on to earn my Masters of Music in Music Education from Northwestern University in 2012. I enjoyed teaching music in the public school for ten years. I find that the most important thing about teaching, especially teaching music, is finding what your students are interested in and getting to know them on a personal level. As a teacher, I have to learn about the unique learning styles my students have, their individual needs, and their goals and dreams as a musician in order to best teach them. Praising accomplishments and encouraging public performances is also very important as a teacher, as for the student, that positive feedback will drive them towards more success in the future.
