Instruments: Piano Saxophone Flute Clarinet
For my piano students, I teach them on a keyboard to get them familiarized with the layout of the piano. I teach proper fingerings, scales, and most importantly music theory. For my flute, clarinet, and saxophone students I work out of appropriate etude books for their performance level. I also teach jazz improvisation. I keep my students engaged and learning is always fun. I want each student to leave each lesson with a sense of learning something great! Read More
Instruments: Saxophone Flute Clarinet Piccolo Oboe Bassoon
There are many terrific methods and books available for musical development. An easy and enjoyable starter is Essential Elements. The Eubanks series is good, especially the advanced flute book one. There are some great solo books especially the Kris books 1-3 that come with nice piano accompaniments. Students really benefit from scale technique development coupled with arpeggio and varied articulation studies like Klose for Clarinet and Melodiusvand Progressive Studies for Saxophone. Read More
Instruments: Saxophone Flute Clarinet
I've been a serious musician since taking up (baritone) saxophone at age 13, over 40 years ago. I first took up clarinet at 10, and later added flute, but saxophone has been my main focus over the years. I play around the Austin area in a variety of settings from big bands to musicals to rock/blues groups to studio recording to classical ensembles; pretty much whatever is asked for. Some of my previous teachers include Jim Riggs at the University of North Texas, Harvey Pittel at the University of Texas, Jeff Elwood at California State University Fullerton, and Joe Eckert at TCU. I care about my students progress and their well being. Music is my life but it can also be very frustrating and difficult. I never want to make a student feel stressed out or feel bad about themselves during one of my lessons. If a student is struggling with a piece of music, we can focus on the difficult part and break it down to just a few notes at a time. Read More

Around this time, I also began taking students for private lessons on violin, guitar, mandolin, banjo and all the other various things I play. In both the bigger theory classes and my one-on-one lessons, I really encourage students to work on material that they enjoy and to relate their studies to the things that they're passionate about. I want to ensure that my students are as excited about music as I am! Read More

I usually balances the time by working first on fundamental/technical aspects of the instrument: intonation, articulation, rhythm, and tone; followed by study of the particular student's chosen repertoire, whether it be jazz standards, rock/pop/blues tunes, classical literature or etudes. I believe in teaching students to organize their practice time wisely, isolating specific issues on the instrument. Cultivating personal musical goals with each student is also very important, in order to maximize the student's enjoyment of the time they spend playing. Read More
