I use what some have called the target approach. With this method you are working on one concept at a time, and you should always have one concept in mind while you practice. Some examples of beginning concepts are 1) keeping a steady beat, 2) sound quality, or 3) smooth finger technique. In one practice session using the target approach you may spend 10 minutes on target 1) and 15 minutes on target 2). The roots of my teaching experiences began at the Lagond Music School in Elmsford, NY. There I taught in the College Preparatory Summer Program, and led classes in Theory, Rythym, Improvisation and Sight Reading. I also taught 4th and 5th grade saxophone classes at P.S. 290 in New York City through the Manhattan School of Music outreach program. For beginning students, I typically start with the method book that the child is given by the school Music teacher, making certain that they are at least adequately prepared to play their assigned studies (or pages) for their school Music lesson. I also incorporate playing the Duets provided in that volume, along with the students. I then suggest that they purchase other necessary methods, duets and solos at their local Music Store(s), as they progress, and they will therefore require more advanced Musical materials than that used at their school. After Berklee I taught full time for one year at a local music store. While attending MSM I taught group classes in New York City middle schools on Clarinet and Flute.
