I create my own lesson plans based off of the individual student. For voice students, we usually warm up, do technical exercises working on varying registers and techniques, and then work on repertoire. I often find the passages in a particular song that the student is struggling with and focus in on those, finding exercises to guide the student. For instrumental students, I work on a lot of music theory and reading, for students of all levels and ages. Read More

My teaching process looks like a mountain stream. We start at the top of the mountain, and the goal is to get to the bottom. As I teach using my tried and true techniques, we make our way down, but when I notice that my student needs extra help, or should be pushed more, we detour into another stream until we can return to our main path. Sometimes, we diverge immediately and continue down different paths until we make it to the bottom anyway! Read More

I tailor my materials, method, and philosophies to the ability and goal of each student. Typically, regular students can expect lessons to cover fundamental aspects of playing the saxophone (embouchure development, technique exercises, etc..) as well as the music and etudes we may be covering. For students with an interest in music theory or improvisation, I like to learn those things alongside common jazz standards so that the knowledge you obtain can be immediately applied in a real musical setting. In other words, I cater to each individual student, especially since no two musicians are the same. If a more advanced student is striving for something like NYSSMA or All-State, I would pace them and their lessons accordingly so that they will be ready in time for whatever they might be preparing for. However, despite this different approach, I would still work with them to understand their strengths and weaknesses with playing so that I can help them improve accordingly. Read More

My teaching style is totally based on the energy and personality of the student. With younger students I try to be as patient as possible by allowing them to tell me exactly what they are looking to learn in the lessons. I then base my lesson plan on this interaction and build the relationship from there. I will assign tasks for the students to complete before the next lesson so that they are doing the work needed to improve their musicianship. Read More

I love seeing my students get better, and different things make different students improve. I like to find what that is for each individual student. For example, some are more interested in reading the notes, and others are better at learning by ear. I try to work with each student's strong points and use the strengths to work on improving the weaknesses. Read More

I'm a passionate instructor specializing in 5th-12th grade band education as well as retired adult students. My focus during my collegiate and graduate education has been jazz saxophone, but my early passion for clarinet and flute as well as classical music has carried on throughout my teaching career. I have performed with clarinet choirs, flute choirs, jazz big bands, and saxophone quartet. Saxophonist and Composer Julian brings a fresh ear to the world of modern creative music, drawing upon literary works and visual art to lend his compositions a singular character. Read More
