Hanon is the one book that has stayed with me for two decades and I adhere to its various training regimens very closely. I have a very open minded and flexible teaching style. I ask my students why they love playing music and I focus on the skills that they want to improve. When I have students who want to perform on stage, I challenge them to play guitar without looking at the strings so that they will focus on the audience. My teaching style is fairly laid-back, allowing each student to progress at their own pace. This allows me the freedom to tailor the instruction to the specific needs of the student and successfully find what creates their individual passion. I also believe that - especially in creative mediums like music and art - every negative critique I point out needs to be accompanied by at least two positive critiques.
