My favorite aspect of teaching is sharing my love of the saxophone with my students, and passing on knowledge about the instrument that is not widely known or available. I have been teaching for 5 years in both private lesson situations and and group lesson situations. I enjoy teaching beginner piano and flute and teaching all levels on the clarinet and saxophones. Privately, I've taught students of all ages and experience levels, with focuses on saxophone sound, technique, music theory, aural skills, reading music, and improvisation. I start beginners off with the Rubank Elementary Method, which introduces reading, scales, arpeggios, and expressive devices such as dynamics and articulation. I also like students to start with improvisation, composition, and ear training as soon as possible. I encourage them to both work on whatever repertoire interests them and find new types of music they don't know they're interested in yet. I taught piano and recorder for over 10 years at Church Street School for Music and Art in Tribeca, and have worked as a teaching artist with The New York POPS since 1992. Currently Im coaching a jazz ensemble at an NYC public middle school and am working with kids that might not have the resources to study privately. Therefore, I will set realistic goals for my students so that they are not overwhelmed, but at the same time are constantly engaged and challenged by the material.
