I believe every student is different, so I like to use several approaches: When the student already knows how to play the instrument, I try to get to know what the student likes at an emotional level, and if the student is willing and open minded (!), I use my vast knowledge of repertoire to enrich the student in places where they might not ordinarily look. If the student has never played an instrument before, I like to start by teaching the reading of rhythm then progressing to the reading of pitches before jumping right into the performance of pieces.
