Throughout my music career, I had amazing teachers that helped me grow as a musician.  I have taken the best of these experiences to help me become a better teacher.  I strive to create a passion for music through learning, positive reinforcement and by creating an environment that is nurturing.  While I believe in structure, discipline and hard work, I also want my learning environment to be fun.  Building a strong foundation in music theory is important, but finding and unleashing the students passion for music is just as important.  I developed my passion for music because I fell in love with learning about different music genres.  I also want to learn and understand the music interests of my students.  Knowing this helps me develop lesson plans that revolve around that type of music.  I want my students to be engaged, and I want them to be interested in what they play.  This helps in the learning process; it becomes less of a work mindset, and more of a fun mindset.  I always acknowledge milestones and accomplishments of my students.  I want my students to feel comfortable asking questions.  I creat a safe, trusting, and nurturing environment for my students to grow as musicians.

As a teacher, I believe one of my greatest responsibilites is to foster a love and care for music.  If the student is not caring about music, then why are they studying? How will they progress?  The best students are the ones who teach themselves.  I can show the student the door, but he or she must walk through it.   My second greatest responsibility is to teach the craft of music - including all the disciplines it needs.  Tone, Pitch, Rhythm, Musicality, and how to practice with efficiency.

I began teaching people how to play instruments when I was in high school, by teaching new students to the band how to play percussion. I then continued teaching once in college by volunteering at local high schools helping new students to the band programs learn brass and percussion. From there I worked with the Rich South high school band director and the Jack Hille middle school band directors. Once I graduated college I taught choir and instrumental music for the catholic school system for two years. Then I received my current job with Chicago Public Schools as the music director starting the schools first music program.

I like to strike a balance of teaching out of various method books(depending on the student and their level of ability, some are more suitable than others of course and I help guide the way), and learning to play by ear, which can be almost anything the student wants to learn, provided it's not overly complicated for them. Technique has it's place, but is certainly not the whole story. Learning music that is fun, while at the same time learning to get better at your instrument, makes the overall process enjoyable and rewarding. Once you have the right tools, music is something that can be fulfilling for the rest of your life, especially when you learn to do it in a fun and healthy way.

I love working hard. Exploring different possibilities. Trying out new ideas. All of this takes a lot of curiosity and persistence. As we progress through our various lessons, I hope that to show my students how fun music can be. Each lesson plan will be crafted for the individual and it is up to them to follow it. I'm confident that, with a little determination, each student will begin to develop their own desire to chase their dreams, regardless of if they pursue music as a profession or not. It's about excellence in life.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
