For beginning students, I focus on building a solid foundation of vocal technique (including: breath, resonance, posture, register, and diction). We build this foundation through singing pieces that the student is familiar with and lots of vocal exercises. At the same time, I like to introduce basic music theory concepts. I am a fan of the Suzuki method for beginning Violin students. It is the way I learned, so I am familiar with it. I do think it is important for students to have some say in what they learn. It is important for young students to have fun during the learning process. I like to throw in some current music that is familiar to the student. I also find it important to set goals. Read More

Depending on the level the student is at I will work with them where they are at and what is needed. If a beginning student I will usually start off with working on scales and use visual tools such as books to help aid the process. I will usually get the student to play or perform some sort of song no matter how simple it is, maybe even get them to make up their own song based off of what they learned. Read More

I think of two things as being central to my teaching style: Fun, and Growth. I think too many music lessons dry out the material, and suck the fun out of something that should be inherently joyful! I try to make every music lesson interesting, and keep my students engaged by giving them material that gets them hyped.
