I like to always start off by having the student play the piece that we've been working on for the past few weeks to check on his/her progress and to address any needs or changes we need to make. I also work with the student on his/her scales and building the foundation needed to play more technically challenging pieces. I find it very important to work on technique as many players nowadays often struggle with more difficult pieces and do not execute certain sections as smoothly due to a lack of attention during his/her early stages in building up the foundation and technique. For beginner students (Piano I), I utilize "Alfred's Basic Adult All-In-One Piano Course: Lesson, Theory, Technic" (Bk1). For my intermediate and advanced (Piano II) students, I use Alfred's Basic Adult All-In-One Course Bk2: Lesson, Theory. Once the student demonstrates an understanding of the fundamentals, I will introduce the appropriate repertoire for their first semester piano performance. All of the assignments for Piano I will either be provided by the instructor or be assigned from your book; this book is a requirement for Piano I. Read More

With any student who is in a beginning sort of stage with their musicality, I will start off by teaching them basic techniques, simple notes or chords(dependent on the type of instrument), and rudimentary knowledge of the notational system. Once they have started to make some progress, I take a unique approach by asking them of their own opinion for where they would want to see themselves go. I do this to not only make it as exciting as possible for the student, but to help them achieve a vision they already have for themselves. Read More

I like to keep the learning simple and basic for the beginning students(children adult), so I typically start with excerpts from the Robert Pace series or John Thompsons piano books from The Willis Music Company. That way I can assess the student to see if they can understand music auditorily, visually and kinesthetically. For my mid to advance students, I access them through customized questions a series of strategic musical exercises to find out what the students are interested in, and assist them in their goals on the level that they can understand.
