This usually involves speaking with the student in the first lesson/lessons to find out what specifically they want to learn or improve. Once I've figured this out, I begin to find repertoire or create exercises that challenge this student in the respective area of focus. My teaching experiences stems back to my undergraduate career at the John J. Cali School of music. I began teaching and tutoring underclassmen in theory, piano and voice while also teaching dance classes in the community. After I graduated I continued teaching and gained an assistantship to continue voice lessons to undergraduate non-majors. I also was the assistant director for our musical theater revue. It is important for both me and my student to have long-term and short-term goals. Long-term goals may have to do with technique--for voice, examples may be releasing tension or singing with proper breath support. Short term goals are more linked to repertoire and can be technical or musical. An example on the piano may be playing through a piece with a particular metronome marking. I am a super passionate and motivated music educator who loves working with students all ages. I graduated from Albright College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Industry Studies. Mary has primarily studied classical trumpet, but also has training in jazz and world music. She currently plays principal trumpet in the Bravura Philharmonic and occasionally performs with the Philharmonic of Southern New Jersey, Orchestra Society of Philadelphia, and the Garden State Philharmonic. Shes also a member of the Philly Bloco and the Bella Vista Brass Quintet. Shes been involved in many performance groups including but not limited to the Vassar Wind Ensemble, Penn Orchestra, Marsyas Ensemble and numerous Purchase Conservatory ensembles including the symphony orchestra, graduate brass quintet, Latin jazz orchestra, klezmer ensemble, and the new music ensemble. I applaud the strengths I see in my students and I make them catch up on their weaker parts. However, I dont pressure anyone too much - I dedicate some time to improving on a difficult task, but I do not spend an entire lesson drilling the same thing, for it gets exhausting and unpleasant.
