For my vocal students, I start with vocal exercises every lesson and allow them learn to vocal techniques through different vocal exercises. Then I work with my students on the repertoire that they are interested in or repertoire that can help them practice their weak spots. For my piano students, I use many different series (Alfred's, Faber, or some classic repertoire) depending on their level and age. For all students, I will also include music theory when I teach because the students will have a stronger foundation with all of these components, which will enable them to learn better, faster and even by their own. Today, I use traditional music education tools with my students with elements of the Russian conservatory style of learning that developed fine pianists like Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev and Shostakovich. I graduated from George Mason University with a Master in Vocal Pedagogy and Bachelor of Music degree in piano and voice. I have the Artist Diploma in Vocal Performance at The Royal Conservatoire of Monaco. I was the Semi-Finalist of NATS, singing fluently in Italian, German, French, Latin and Korean. That causes both sides of the brain to learn together. I do not rely heavily on exercises or drills, but prefer to find pieces that will musically teach the needed techniques. That being said, I do occasionally use portions of training etudes by Czerny, Isidor Philipp, and others as needed.
