I use the score to pose questions about the way musical material is organized, how it reflects the composer’s ideas, and what makes the score coherent to the player and the  listener. In this way, a score is one point of focus for developing interest and a questioning attitude—practices that will serve students for a lifetime. I believe that our ability to talk about music emerges from the experience of “thinking music” as performers and that we truly learn music by using its grammar. I love teaching and helping students reach their potential.  I have been teaching music for over 40 years.  I teach beginning to professional level voice lessons from folk and pop to Broadway and Opera. I also teach beginning level piano, violin, viola, cello, double bass, and guitar. My students understand the voice and voice production. For beginning students, what I start with generally depends on what instrument they play, but in general, I use various "Essentials" books. As the student progresses past the fundamentals of music and playing their instrument, I will move on to more advanced or technical musical exercises, as well as solo repertoire if the student is looking to perform for a recital, NYSSMA, etc. My teaching style for older, more advanced students is relatively the same, excluding the "Essentials" and fundamentals. I put great emphasis on establishing a very good control on the technique of violin. I do it by teaching students how to do scales and etudes while having fun and making themselves more motivated by setting their own goals and achieving them, which also builds up their confidence. After students get more and more in command of themselves and the violin, I would then proceed to help the students with their own repertoire and guide them to formulate their own musical ideas and make their own voice be heard!
