I use the Alfred Piano series for most of my piano students. Woodwind students will use either Rubank or Hal Leonard series of books. During the first lesson, I will clarify the student's goals and needs and choose a book accordingly. I also add finger warm-ups and breathing exercises. Students are encouraged to pick a song from their own choosing to learn as a "fun-song". For students who are already in an instrumental program through school, I will start with whatever method book they are using at school, and branch off from there. Depending on the instrument, I will bring in another method book specific to that instrument book and we will also use some sort of etude book. I cater my teaching to each student and put my emphasis on the appreciation of music in general. Even if the child ends up not continuing as a pianist, my goal is that he/she will always be in contact with music, whether as a patron, composer, or playing another instrument. I am an enthusiastic and compassionate instructor who loves to share my musical knowledge with those eager and willing to learn. I received a Bachelor's degree in Music Therapy from Cleveland State University in 2018 and became a board-certified music therapist in January of 2019. With this degree and profession comes the knowledge and skillset of numerous instruments, including voice (my primary instrument), guitar, piano, and ukulele. For beginning piano students, I use Marilyn Lowe's Music Moves for Piano series. If a student already has purchased piano books or has piano books from an older sibling, I would not ask the student to purchase more books until we had used what they already had to its full capacity. For adults and older beginners (piano and voice), I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. My lessons include a time to practice piano technique as well as time to learn new pieces. I usually recommend R. and N. Faber books for beginners. I also encourage performances and for those, I let students choose works (classical, romantic, contemporary, jazz, or pop) based on skill level and personal interest.
