I started teaching full time, at which point I added piano and speaking to my repertoire. I encourage students to set goals for each week and complete them. If your children want to learn the cello, I will use encouragement and play as a way to introduce music. Everybody's experience with music is different and not everybody will pick things up as quickly as others so you must meet them where they are. Music is nerve-racking at first because expressing ourselves isn't something that is always encouraged so I look for something they are interested in to start off. My method is definitively circumstantial to the student. If the student is hoping to perform casually, then we advance at a casual pace. If the student is hoping to perform competitively, we go much faster.
