My teaching style is extremely student centered. I help my students find the music that they love, and I help them play it musically. I focus on creating a nurturing environment where students can explore, take risks, and ask questions. I meld my content expertise with my ability to read people well and really help them find that path to success that works for THEM. There is no one-size-fits all approach to teaching music. Read More

I like to create my own lesson plans and materials, though if the student (or their parent) would like a specific method, I would be happy to oblige. For beginner, I start with the fundamentals of reading music: reading note names in different registers, reading rhythms (I like to use the Eastman system for speaking rhythms), and sight-reading skills using movable do solfeggio (all this in a manner that suits the student, whether a child or an adult. I am not strict in one specific style. I try to be malleable in my approach as I get to know the habits and abilities of each individual. I've had students for whom I thought it best to be more rigid and repetitive drill based, while others seem to benefit from a more passive guru. It's a spectrum. Always, though, I try to control the pace of the session, to speak thoughtfully, honestly, and constructively whilst always maintaining the utmost respect for the struggles that a student is facing. Also, I have been fortuante to have played at locations all over the U.S. and shared the stage with musicians like Warren Haynes and Jimmy Herring (formerly of The Allman Brothers). Read More

I have been teaching in New Orleans and expanding my studio for over four years. I love to meet my students where they are, push them to be the best musician they can be, and support them in achieving their goals. One way I do that is through asking them challenging questions that require them to apply previous concepts we've learned and reasoning. Another way is training students to use the metronome early on. Read More

I've seen the face of an 80 year old grasping the ukulele and finally getting to hear himself playing his own songs, and seeing the glow in his eyes like a child. When you set realistic goals and set what steps are going to get you there, all the while celebrating each little victory, every lesson depends on the needs of my student. I am currently teaching solely for the fun of it and the challenge in it, as it is not my main career or main project, but it is something I get a lot from, and I have found over the years, has helped a ton of people get back into picking up their instrument, and cutting out the world for a bit. For those who are just starting on an instrument, I usually focus on basic technique. Bass and guitar are both physical instruments in their own way, and getting acclimated to the feel of it is key to having success on it. For bass, I typically teach out of the Suzuki book series, while as for guitar, I use the Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, however, I am happy to teach whatever method a student or their parents feel strongly about.
