While students will find that their progress is influenced by their practice habits, it's also my goal to make clear what effective practice looks like, what kinds of questions they might ask to figure things out, and how to be patient with themselves. For beginning students (children or adults) I begin with an introduction to the major scale and implement it into our vocal warm-ups. Once the student has developed and progressed over certain aspects I will introduce repertoire that will be learned and performed at the end. I often create my own custom lesson plans because every student is different and requires certain attention. For beginning students (regardless of age instrument) I try to simplify the approach and work on a set of warm ups/exercises coupled with a performance piece or song that they can feel good about and lots of fun listening assignments. From there I have a few options of instruction methods that I tailor to the individual student. More intermediate/advanced students will not escape from some of the basics (metronome, scales, rudiments etc.) but will be met with many more choices of performance material based more on their individual goals. One of my strengths as a teacher is adaptability. I teach interactively and flexibly, tailoring instruction to each students individual needs and learning style. For students with limited background, I assign simplified arrangements of familiar pieces to sustain motivation. Lastly, I strive to make students feel a sense of fulfillment and motivation while studying with me. I assign goals that are attainable for each student, including giving public performances and participating in competitions whenever possible, as students make remarkable progress by observing peers and performing regularly.
