I am a pianist, composer, and pre-service Music Educator from Flint, MI. I have played piano and trumpet for 11 years, and am currently in my senior year of getting my BME from The University of Michigan-Flint. During the first lesson I have the student sing (if it is a vocal lesson) their favorite song so I can hear them. After that i use my keyboard and take the student through some excersizes to really home in on that range. I listen for qualities and we discuss the positives and what improvements are needed. More than anything music should be fun. The greatest musicians are the ones who enjoy playing music even when they're just practicing. I like to teach in a way that involves asking the student questions in order to get them to figure out the answer for themself, rather than just lecturing the whole time while they start daydreaming! I'm very friendly and patient. Learning music should be enjoyable, and never a burden. My students learn at their own pace and have fun doing it. I'm happy to work with youngters, providing they have a basic grasp of letters and numbers. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with the Faber series, along with accompanying primer theory and lesson book. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. In addition to this, I typically start to add scale exercises to increase strength and speed in one's fingers. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Read More
