I teach vocal students from ages 6-adult. We work on breathing techniques, music theory, interpretation, and style. I like students to sing their favorite styles. I also expose them to songs that I feel would be appropriate for their growth. We also work on performance and auditions! Developing tone needs to be paramount from the beginning, with using slower exercises to build the muscles and develop the ear. I will also have the student work with a tuner relatively quickly, but the ultimate goal is to develop the ear relative to other pitches, so I mostly work with drones playing in the background so that the student can play a passage with the root tone as a constant reference. My methods differ depending on a students age and experience level. For the younger students who are just beginning their journey we will learn out of Hal Leonard's books for guitar or Piano Adventures for piano students. As a student progresses we will begin to take the learning outside of these books and more to music theory, technique, and to the application of these practices onto the instrument. Coming back to goal setting, each student will want something a little different out of it from the next. So I find it helpful to ask and figure out; if there's a specific song they wish to learn, what some of their favorite artists are so we may get a grasp what style they are into, or just want to learn about music in general so that one day they may be able to create their own original work.
