The teaching begins with identifying student's musical needs, goals and tastes. Students are taught a stimulating, thorough, and graduated course of recital solos, theory, technical studies, and a strandard instrument repertoire. For those wishing to pursue more of a classical approach to music, there are proven methods to accomplish that goal established by European Master Teacher and pedagogues. Also, I can teach the know-how of Jazz and Blues though gradual lessons that cover basic scales and chords up to melody and harmony development. Read More

My teaching experiences go back at least 15 years. I started when I was in college and have never stopped teaching. In my lessons I focus on the whole child. Together we find out where their strengths lie and capitalize on those strengths. Music is supposed to be fun and that is one of my goals is to keep it fun and exciting for the student. I find it is best to expose the student to all types of music new and old and everything from classical to hip hop. Read More

I love to have fun in my lessons. No single student understands the same thing the same way so I take the time to listen/understand them as a person and as a musician. While it would be wonderful if all of my students became virtuosi musicians, I understand that sometimes math class may be at the forefront of their attention. That said, practice is still required. Like a doctor, I prescribe solutions to students to help them achieve their goals and will do everything I can to help them to succeed but if they dont take the remedy, success is can be quite slow. My preferred method of teaching for beginner students is my own adaptation of the Thompson method with strong emphasis on theory and technique. A study of intervalic relationships, chords and progressions combined with terminology, sight reading, ear training and form will provide the student with skills which will allow them to play any style and genre of music they desire. Although the Suzuki method seems to be popular today, I have discovered many short comings of this pedagogical approach and often renders a good pianist limited in their capabilities as a well rounded musician. For Beginning students I have my own book. It focuses on learning a song to play, clapping the rhythm to that song while writing the music notes and making the connections from notes to piano keys. As students progress we incorporate scales, and exercises from such books as Dozen a Day series and learning to compose a song or play a duet with the teacher. Read More

My teaching style relaxed yet firm and consistent week-to-week. I expect all my students to practice and highly encourage them to perform in a recital as often as they feel comfortable. I encourage the parents to oversee practicing during the week and give me feedback as often as necessary. When the student is young, I work with the parents on ways to keep their child motivated and interested as well as keeping my expectations realistic. Read More
