For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Suzuki level books, String Explorer and Fiddletime joggers to increase sightreading and listening skills. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. I started teaching in a local studio while I was going to college. I majored in jazz guitar and minored in classical piano. Had some education classes but a classroom was not for me. I enjoy the one on one experiance of private lessons. I started teaching at the Combs College Conservatory when I was a junior in college.I have held numerous teaching positions, mostly guitar and piano. If a student comes in as a beginner, I will teach them the notes first, then reading on the staff and chords. I try to encourage everyone to learn how to read music, but certain students prefer to learn pieces quicker, in which case I can speed up the process by telling them the notes to play. I constantly ask the students for the piece that they want to play themselves and I encourage them to try them even if they feel like it appears too difficult. Read More
