Music lessons will certainly broaden the students knowledge of music. It has been proven through scientific study that the study of music will improve the individuals cognitive ability and aids in brain development. Children who study music develop higher math and problem solving skills. Age is not a factor as we are never to old to learn. My students range in age from 5 years old to well into their 70’s, many of whom simply want to improve their skills or recapture the joy of making music. The study and enjoyment of music can and often becomes a life long adventure whether its just for fun or as a career. Read More

Depending on my student's age and skill level I usually have them begin with Suzuki books, Essential Elements books, or a combination of the two. As students advance I often incorporate etudes and/or exercises by Lee, Dotzauer, Galamian, Mooney, Sevcik, Duport, and Popper. While ear training is an essential skill that I teach to all of my students, the younger a student is the more I'll have them "play by ear" instead of reading sheet music. Read More

My teaching style depends very much on what your goal is in deciding to learn to play piano. I can teach you how to play classical piano, piano improvisation, piano accompaniment, or how to play in a certain style with a musical group. Your goal as a student determines the approach we take. That being said, typically, I take a three pronged approach toward teaching: 1. Theory; teach the fundamentals of sight reading and music theory in small increments and apply them by creating custom musical exercises. 2. Read More

I have been teaching music lessons as a music therapist since 2007 and have much experience with adapted lessons for students with developmental disabilities and other limitations. I started teaching typical lessons in addition to adapted lessons in 2013 and it has been an added joy for me. I love teaching basic music lessons and music theory to children developing strong musical roots. I encourage a regular practice schedule for all of my students to help develop strong habits and engraving music in each of their lives. Read More

For beginning piano students I typically start with Faber's piano adventure series--I typically have students work through the lesson, performance, and theory books while providing them with additional repertoire on the side (pop, disney, classical pieces etc.) For voice students, I typically spend about a third of the lesson working on technique--proper breathing, posture, extending range, working on tone quality etc. Then the rest of the lesson is spent working on solo song repertoire. I love to see my students develop a passion for music, but moreover to develop the great self confidence that comes from beginning to play an instrument and sing. Lessons should be enjoyable and also focus some attention to the things that will help the student achieve all that they are wanting to accomplish in the long term. Read More
