There are many books on drums and piano or voice. I have to get to know the student to determine what I will use to get better results. It will depend on their age and attitude and initial talent. Also, a lot of kids are busy at school and don't have much time for practice. For beginning students (regardless of age instrument) I try to simplify the approach and work on a set of warm ups/exercises coupled with a performance piece or song that they can feel good about and lots of fun listening assignments. From there I have a few options of instruction methods that I tailor to the individual student.
