Once the student has progressed and has a good grasp of the fundamentals, I will bring in other repertoire appropriate to their level. I emphasize the importance of developing good technique and a fundamental understanding of the basic components of music: major and minor scales, arpeggios, chords, modes and chord progressions. What started as casual pointers then developed into structured half-hour lessons each week. Even if the child ends up not continuing as a pianist, my goal is that he/she will always be in contact with music, whether as a patron, composer, or playing another instrument.
