Having taught many students over the years, my favorite books for young beginners are the Rubank series and Pares Scale book. These give a good foundation and progression and have easy to read fingering charts. Once a student gets going with these I introduce simple duet books so that, by playing with me, they develop a strong sense of tone and intonation. The first solo books I recommend are collections of solo's by famous composers, these give the student the chance to gravitate toward the style and composer they like best. Read More

I use what some have called the target approach. With this method you are working on one concept at a time, and you should always have one concept in mind while you practice. Some examples of beginning concepts are 1) keeping a steady beat, 2) sound quality, or 3) smooth finger technique. In one practice session using the target approach you may spend 10 minutes on target 1) and 15 minutes on target 2). My teaching experience started 1990 after received certificate from YAMAHA Music Academy in Japan. Encouraging regular practice on a consist schedule is one of key points I like to emphasis for younger students as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. My students are encouraged to enter recitals as well as work on composing their original materials so they can feel good about their accomplishments and stay motivated to learn. Read More
