With students learning or continuing education on the piano, like to start with the basics. Once the student begins to have a grasp for that i begin to introduce reading music and theory. I also like to prepare the student to play any genre of music by sheet music or by ear as well. Music and teaching it to others has been my life's work and passion. I am classically trained (obviously) and I am the first and still only person in my family to graduate from a four year college and later graduate school, having earned BM and MM degrees in Piano Performance with a minor in organ at Shenandoah University. In addition to 27 years of music ministry, 26 years as an accompanist and/or MD (classical and music theatre settings) and of course 16 years of private piano teaching, my greatest professional accomplishment is having played at Carnegie Hall in June 2014. My first experience teaching someone was when I was younger in my high school days, I was teaching my 7 year old nephew how to play ukulele which was an arduous task indeed. But through said trails and tribulations we managed to accomplish our goals together. Currently Im teaching guitar at the fine arts academy and I am teaching one student consistently while also substituting occasionally. One thing I have learned through teaching is that actually listening to music during practice is a big help and motivation which I like to include in sessions. Read More

My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 23 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 20+ years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the piano and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. Read More
