My approach to teaching is, basically, that playing piano should be enjoyable and fun so I tailor the lessons to the type of music in which the student has interest. I do, however, have a basic structure that includes reading music, finger dexterity and songs at the student's playing level. From there I take the student through Bach's inventions, Clementi and Kuhlau sonatinas, and childrens' music by Schumann, Tchaikovsky, and Mozart. If a student leans towards a preference for popular styles, I use the Faber and Faber Jazz and Blues series and acquaint the student with jazz chords and patterns. As well as learn songs and do theory/aural exercises from the Faber books, I like to use online music theory games for my students to practice skills like note identification. I have been a part of the Hazleton Liberty Band (which has roots tracing back to the Civil War) and church groups since high school. In college, I was a part of smal woodwind chamber ensembles, concert band, choirs, marching band, big bands, and small jazz ensembles. I continue to stay active in many diverse musical groups.
