I started playing at about the age of three. My father was a drummer who played semi-professionally part time. I would accompany him to rehearsals and gigs. I would occasionally sub for him starting at the age of six or seven. He also coached the school band that I played in. Once out of high school, I studied with Henry Adler,who authored Buddy Rich's snare drum book, and then jazz and big band drummer Sonny Igoe. Although I was already gigging, I was very much interested in Big band, Jazz, and Fusion and wanted to sharpen my skills in reading charts and improvisation. I could not have asked for a better teacher than Sonny, who I consider my mentor. During these years of study I was gigging and recording with everyone I could. I studied music theory, guitar, and piano with several of the fine musicians I met along the way. Since then my on the job training has spread across all styles of music; rock, blues, jazz, fusion, theater, and playing with a number of big bands, including several years of touring. I also ran my own band for several years, as well as writing and arranging for other artists.
I have been involved in music for as long as I can remember, singing in church choirs and leading contemporary worship. I graduated from McMurry University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Piano Performance in 2004. Having decided that performing was not my #1 passion I then pursued a Masters of Music degree, specializing in Music Therapy, from Colorado State Univeristy. I have been a professional music therapist for the past 6 years, working with children and adolescents with developmental disabilities as well as mental health populations.
I've been playing the piano since the age of four. Music has always been my passion, and I love passing this wonderful knowledge on to others. I love teaching younger children, but I also enjoy working with people of all ages, including adults. I believe that music is not a "one size fits all" experience and that it is important to focus on the needs, aspirations, and desires of the individual. I also believe that performance is a great way to motivate students, as well as reward them. However, considering the fact that some students may be uncomfortable with going on stage in front of people, performance is not required. Overall, I'm very excited to work with new and interesting people and I always look forward to connecting with others using the power of music.
My musical experiences started at church in the 80's when I discovered that I could sing really high notes imitating Christian artists like Sandy Patty and the late puertorican soprano Yolanda Vadiz. Those experiences motivated me to consider studying music seriously not just like another hobby. I started studying voice techniques at the age of 20 at the Sacred Music Institute in the Methodist Church in Hato Rey, PR. There I took classes with tenor Jose Torres and baritone Rafael Cotto who prepared me for the audition at the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico. Immediately accepted at the audition, I went on to begin my musical journey singing professionaly in choirs and as a soloist in different concert halls. Fine Arts of Puerto Rico, Carnegie Hall at NY, Episcopal Churches, Methodist Churches and also University Halls like the Interamerican University of PR and the Conservatory of Music of PR. I took master classes with tenor Alfredo Krauss, bass Justino Diaz and other famous opera singers. Later during my studies, I decided to change my main studies to Voice Education to fulfill the void of helping other singing aspirers to perfectionate their abilities mainly in music ministries at church.
I've been in the field of music education, production and performance for over 20 years. I have spent half of my life helping others find their path in music. One of the most important lessons I have learned as a teacher is that...."people don't care how much you know until they know how much you care!!!!" I understands that building a relationship with a student is just as important as the information I teach.

For the sake of lessons and practice, a keyboard is often a much more viable option than buying a piano. Pianos are space consuming and expensive, as well as being very loud. Keyboards are perfect, especially for beginners, as they are more diverse in their functionality. Most keyboards come with a range of different sounds and effects (FX), such as chorus, reverb, and synthesizer sounds. Another great feature common to many keyboards is a record function. This allows students to hear things back after they have played them, such as practicing scales... or to record ideas they are composing!
Our recommended starting age for piano is 4 or 5, when students are capable of playing the keys properly and have sufficient strength in the fingers and hands. Young students also should have begun learning to count and to read. No matter what your age may be, the piano is an excellent introduction to the fundamentals of music, including music theory and basic composition techniques.

As piano lessons are customized to the needs of each individual student, we are able to better help you to achieve your goals. Beginning students may just want to learn an instrument out of interest and for fun, so the basics will be covered to get you up and running. This tends to include music theory and technical exercises, such as hand position, fingering, and playing scales and chords. Intermediate students may be working towards an exam, recital or performance, so will cover playing, performance and stylistic techniques such as legato, staccato, glissando, sight reading, working on speed, runs, fills, and solos. Other topics that may be covered in your piano lessons are things like expanding your repertoire, developing improvisation and jamming skills, and studying the various types of genre-based playing techniques and styles, such as Jazz, Ragtime, Blues, Rock, or Classical piano.
Music lessons in your home offer a convenient option to learning music! Most of our students request in home lessons for this reason. As long as you have a piano or keyboard in your home, then you should be all set to start your lessons! Children who have never played an instrument before may feel more comfortable studying in their own home, as it may be less intimidating than going somewhere else. In-home lessons decrease the time and gas money spent traveling to a different location.

Rahsaan is an extremely talented player who relates really well with my teenagers. He has them both interested in learning. Given Rahsaan's expertise, it's clear that even though they are beginners now, they can learn from him for a long time to come. There are only a handful of people I count in my life who were great teachers, and Laura is one of them. Her musicianship is so secure as are her technique and personality that she zeros in on my weaknesses and devises exercises to strengthen them, and during the lesson it is not "Do this, no, do that" which is unnerving to a novice. She understands the most important part of study is relaxation, so that is easy to achieve with such a confident and compassionate human. Music is her life and she is eager to share her talent with everyone. A rare find, indeed!

Giorgi has made learning cello even more fun. From the sympathetic, "It is hard" to the precise, "Be careful about the curve of the thumb" he has strengthened learning in every lesson, without being overwhelming. He started playing a little duet on only the 3rd lesson or so, which made me feel, even as a beginner, that I'm already starting to make (occasionally screachy) music. He has suggested a variety of drills and practice techniques which have also sped up the process a lot. And he has a good sense of humor and surprising amount of patience.

Omar is a great teacher as he provides expert instruction AND the right amount of encouragement. He is a professional musician on several instruments, yet he is patient with beginners! He also has gone out of his way to purchase an appropriate book for me, strings to re-string the cello, and extra attention to tuning. I appreciate how he explains and demonstrates exactly what a beginning cello student needs to know.

My daughter has been taking piano lessons through her school district program for the last two years. She had learned a lot in that class but I noticed that she needed advanced classes at this point. After reviewing several websites I decided to enroll my daughter for the trial at MUSIKA. We got Mrs. Veronica B., and I am more than happy we got her as my daughter's teacher. Mrs. Veronica B. was very professional and very knowledgeable at the trial day. She was able to assess my daughter skill's level, and then she was able to give suggestions about how to improve those skills. My daughter has taken 5 classes with Mrs. Barker, and I can see she enjoys each class and she's improved a lot since day one. I can picture my daughter playing her favorites songs on the piano very soon!!! :-)

Travis rocks. My 7-year-old son and I both take lessons with him. Travis has moved me off the plateau I was on with lessons that focus on theory and technique. And for my son, he's been able to instill a desire and interest that were missing when he previously took piano lessons. With Travis teaching us, the limits are the ones we impose on ourselves. Needless to say, Travis himself plays a mean guitar to boot!

Karleen has really turned it around for me. My previous teacher (not from Musika) had me feeling anxious, upset, and incapable...NOT the desired result! Karleen's method is clear, appropriate for my beginning level, and (best of all) actually lets me achieve some progress! I'm actually looking forward to my lessons now!
Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.Ok
