I received a Bachelor’s of Music degree in Voice and Music Theater from the University of Texas at Arlington, where I appeared in several productions such has Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi (Gianni Schicchi); Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma (Judd Fry) and South Pacific (Emile de Beque) and as Tevey in Fiddler on the Roof by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick. Professional credits include the Fort Worth Opera; Cincinnati Opera and Shreveport Opera Company and many local area concerts.
As I previously mentioned I believe that every student is unique in how they learn, their musical goals, the time they have to devote to music, etc. Having the luxury of teaching one to one enables me to teach the individual. In addition to teaching conventional music theory, reading, writing, et al, I also teach improvisation and playing by ear. I've known pianists who are incredible technicians - they can play any piece of music put in front of them perfectly. Amazing! However, bring them to a Blues Jam and they're lost. Without wtitten music they don't know what to play. My students will never have this problem. They will be good music readers who understand improvisation and how to use their ears. I also feel great personal satisfaction and accomplishment, with my students progress and successes. It is wonderful to take a student from "Where are all the C's on the piano?", to playing Mozart, Beethoven, John Legend, or Pharrell Williams, within 6 months!
I have enjoyed playing, singing and accompanying vocally and on piano, organ and keyboard since the age of 7. I have both Choir and Solo vocal experience as well as played piano and organ for Churches and special performances. I have trained choirs and soloist and taught singing lessons for more than 10 years. I also have trained praise dancers and trained, accompanied instrumentally and toured an All City Children's Choir throughout Tarrant County for many years. My goal and thesis statement is twofold: to promote worship and praise everywhere and to raise another generation to love Music and worship Him.
Because I care about my students as people first, I am able to encourage and bring out their best performance. My years of experience and refined teaching methods make me effective in helping students reach music and performance goals. And finally, my professional record demotrates that I have and continue to be committed to the strengthening myself in the field.
I am far from a traditional teacher. When first working with a beginner, I focus heavily on building a strong foundation which can be built upon through additional instruction and self-teaching. I believe students should have the freedom and flexibility to take their own direction whether it be Classical, Contemporary, or any number of genres from around the world. This is important because inevitably, over the course of their musical development, interests and needs change. Additionally, students who are locked into 10+ years of strictly Classical teaching are more likely to lose interest, and the desire to continue their musical journey. The foundation that I help students to build is one which can be used to learn any type of music, whether that development continues on their own, within my studio, or with other instructors. While I am deep in advanced classical pieces within my own practice, I have spent much of my time at the piano focusing on non-traditional improvisation, and improv-based composition. This is something which I have incorporated into lessons with past students. This provides an outlet for students that is sometimes more creative than learning only written music, and also opens diverse opportunities for functional ear training. I am very adamant in my belief that the chemistry between teacher and student is critical to development. I have worked with children of all ages as a pianist, a roller skating coach, and as an administrator in an international high school. My communication skills are very eclectic due to these experiences. The trial lesson is extremely important in determining whether we are a good fit. For this reason, I expect students to come to their first lesson with an open mind, an eagerness to learn, and at least some small ideas about what they would like to gain from studying music.

In many ways adult learners have an advantage over young students. Adults have better self-discipline with regards to practice, are more patient, and have higher levels of concentration. This allows them to develop the basic skills at a reasonably quick rate. Learning the piano is also a great way of remaining mentally active during adulthood, and helps students to improve their hand-eye co-ordination and develop a critical ear. Learning to play the piano in adulthood can be beneficial health-wise, is a great way of harnessing creativity and stimulating the brain and it can be immensely satisfying when achieving set goals.
We recommend that students get either a full size piano, or a weighted keyboard for their lessons. It is very important to set up a practice schedule every day. You can purchase a basic keyboard at a local music store or online. Some students may also wish to rent a piano if they do not wish to invest in buying one right away. Digital keyboards offer a good choice for the beginning student because they are portable and easily stored in your home. Keyboards will start at 61 keys at the smallest amount and increase to a full size keyboard of 88 keys. The most common brands of keyboard are Casio, Yamaha, and Korg.
As piano lessons are customized to the needs of each individual student, we are able to better help you to achieve your goals. Beginning students may just want to learn an instrument out of interest and for fun, so the basics will be covered to get you up and running. This tends to include music theory and technical exercises, such as hand position, fingering, and playing scales and chords. Intermediate students may be working towards an exam, recital or performance, so will cover playing, performance and stylistic techniques such as legato, staccato, glissando, sight reading, working on speed, runs, fills, and solos. Other topics that may be covered in your piano lessons are things like expanding your repertoire, developing improvisation and jamming skills, and studying the various types of genre-based playing techniques and styles, such as Jazz, Ragtime, Blues, Rock, or Classical piano.
Musika deals primarily with home lessons for students. The location is the only difference between our in-home lessons and our studio lessons. As they do not have to travel to their lessons, home piano lessons can be highly convenient for those parents and students with a busy schedule. Students will need a keyboard to practice on, however. For younger students in particular, having piano lessons in the comfort of their own home can be of great benefit. They will feel more safe and relaxed in familiar surroundings, allowing them to focus on learning and enjoying playing the piano.
Due to the attention span of very young children, we advise that students begin their piano lessons no younger than age 4 or 5. Piano lessons are a great way to introduce an instrument for the first time to a younger child. Learning piano will teach them basic musical skills such as rhythm and harmony, as well as how to read sheet music and chords.

Laura is a fabulous teacher. She explains concepts to me using concrete examples so that I can understand changes that I need to make to my posture, breathing, phrasing, etc. She makes warm-up exercises fun, and she's got a great sense of humor over all. Her teaching style is collaborative, more egalitarian (she respects what I already know and meets me at my level), tailored to my particular interests and strengths, and I always look forward to our lessons!

I am in my 60s and decided to get back into playing my guitar. I thought taking lessons would be a good way to formalize the endeavor. I did have some concern about whether working with a teacher would work out as I've behave only played for my own enjoyment for a long time. Peter and I have had a few lessons together and I am truly enjoying the experience. He is very supportive and flexible. We arrived at a three gold approach that is really working for me. We focus on developing a playlist, learning some of the more iconic tunes from leading artist that I would have a hard time learning on my own and developing some technical skills related to style and music theory. Now I look forward to my next lesson and am already playing better and enjoying the journey. Peter is a great teacher I'm lucky to have the opportunity to work with him.

Steve gets you started right away with songs but also goes into music theory and reading music which adds to understanding and appreciation of the music. He is very approachable and you can tell that he absolutely loves music and teaching. It is hard not to be excited about the process of learning with Steve. Mike has been working with my son Robert for over a year and has just started working with my daughter Kate. Mike is both a great musician and a good teacher. He connects with the kids and keeps them engaged. He is able to tailor the lesson to focus on music that is interesting to each child. He also encourages the students to participate in a public setting which is great. I would highly recommend Mike.

Lindsey has been coming to our house to give saxophone lessons to our 12 year old daughter for about a month. She is an absolute joy. Bill has been a great teacher for both my 6 yr. old and my 8 yr. old. He is always on time, keeps them engaged, and gives them just enough of a challenge for the next week. They are both beginners, but I am surprised by how much they already know after just a month or so of lessons. Both kids are practicing willingly and look forward to lesson.
Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.Ok
