Making lessons fun is my top priority, and I show that learning the basics and the fundamentals can be fun, if it is done correctly. For beginning students, I use John Thompson's books. Students progress through Bastien, and Burgmuller, before moving on to graduated solo repertoire. Intermediate and advanced students will work on core Classical and Romantic period piano works, while building dexterity and fluidity by playing scales, chords, and arpeggios. Read More

I use my own materials and lesson plans based on my past experiences and education. For beginners, I will generally start with simple songs like Sweet Home Alabama, I Love Rock n Roll, and Heathens. These are all songs that can be played and sung simply and most students have heard them already! For all of my students of any age, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements and learning a recognizable song hand picked by the student and approved by me. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce jazz repertoire, sight reading and things like, technical exercises, jazz improvisation, theory, ear training and classical music etudes. For a beginning student on guitar, I have them learning notes from a Hal Leonard, Mel Bay, or Alfred starter book. All these books are great, but I believe it depends on the individual student and how they learn. I also teach tab to beginners. I feel it is important to read tabs these days as well as notes. I also work with music theory. It is also important to know what you are doing, not just putting your fingers on the strings. Read More
