I started teaching two years ago at a private lesson studio in Denver called My Music Skool. My main focus was on piano and saxophone. Now I teach privately as a freelance musician. Two points I emphasize when teaching are practicing at least once a day no matter how long you play and learning what inspires you. There will always be some sort of theory I sneak in whether it's learning scales or building technical skills that will build confidence and ability, but if these devices aren't being applied to the type of music that inspires the student, then learning music becomes discouraging instead of fun. There is so much to learn in music, it can be tempting to try to teach concepts too quickly. However, an organized, logical approach that introduces one concept at a time works best. In High School, my music practice skills carried over to my academic studies and I was able to graduate with Honors, a 4.00, and earn 14 scholarships to attend college to become a musicteacher. I began teaching guitar part time in late high school to just a few students. During college, I expanded my student base to include up to 30 students per week. I also have plenty of experience teaching group lessons of up to 25 children in both lesson and rehearsal formats. I prefer to teach my students using a jazz sensibilty applied all types of music. My teaching style is instill the love of music in students. I do want my students to grow up and still playing piano because they love to play, not because their parents forced them to play. I want them love piano from the bottom of their hearts. In order to achieve that, I adjust the material according to the student's progresses. I encourage students to set smaller, individual goals that can help them reach the larger goals they may have. I was then invited to move back to my college town of Brookings, South Dakota to be their middle school band director. I moved to Sioux Falls and taught in the Catholic School System for a number of years.
