No single approach works with every student when teaching drums. There are simply too many styles and methods to choose from. But when working with beginners, I tend to focus mostly on developing a good internal sense of rhythm and good listening skills. Then if the student wishes, we may specialize in classical, jazz, rock, latin, or whatever style the student is interested in. During my undergraduate years, I maintained a full private studio of beginning to intermediate students, and while living in Germany, I taught piano and voice at a private German music studio and in my home. I started teaching my first student in 2008 when I was studying at the University of Washington. Since then my studio has really taken off and I find that I love teaching more and more! I have coached advanced adult students and taught many children (some starting as early as 5 years old).
