I like to spend a little bit of time assessing what level a student is at so I can appropriately guide them to where they need and want to be. Early on I stress the importance of self evaluation and critical thinking, as it is priceless to be able to teach oneself using these analytical skills. Learning music is like building a pyramid that will never have a peak, blocks are added again and again and always built on the progress of the past but there is never a point where a student has "completed" music. In the summer of 2014, I moved to Boston, released a solo album, and formed GEPH with fellow Stickist John Tyler Kent and drummer Josh Merhar, where the three of us immediately began making waves, releasing a debut album in March of 2016. All of my students follow more or less a similar path that deviates a bit once they have developed some. No matter the age I start all students off with building fundamentals of tone, flexibility, articulation, and range. I use a combination of exercises from David Vining, UNC's own Buddy Baker, and Emory Remington. While building fundamental playing skills I will have students begin playing etudes. Younger students will start in their band method books, but as time goes on they will transition into Rochut's Melodious etudes, and the Rubank method books. Read More

There are a variety of suitable musical aides to use in teaching. Many different publishers and authors of study books are available and I am familiar with more than several of them. Age and maturity/attention span of the student will help to determine which books to select. Often a generally creative adolescent will prefer picture books of music to begin with. Adults can be engaged in fundamentals of music theory with piano playing in mind and receive more conversational instruction as appropriate with adult music to practice and play. Read More
