I've taught for special circumstances and needs of all kinds. Ask me about it and I'll tell you. Especially on piano and keyboards, I have found that combining classical music and learning from books with learning music that students enjoy listening to on their own can revolutionize how students learn and enjoy their instrument. I also work with my students to learn their instrument and the necessary music theory concepts by writing their own melodies and small songs, so that students can feel creative while learning another method of processing the world around them. Instruments: Accordion
I put a lot of emphasis on scales and fingering exercises. Once fingering exercises are mastered, it is relatively easy to play classical and quick time tunes. The wonderful thing about accordion is that the bass provides upward mobility in tonic keys that go up in fifths, e.g. C G D A B F# and all tonic notes/buttons have thirds on the counter bass, e.g. C has E, G has B etc. right next to the tonic buttons so that you have incredible variety within six or seven buttons combining major, minor, seventh and diminished seventh chords within that same group of notes. My experience teaching started in college. I was lucky enough to be elected the Music Director of an all male a cappella group at Missouri State and much of my time was spent teaching vocal techniques, musicianship, and arranging to the group as well as individually. At this time, I was also the tenor section leader for the Missouri State Concert Chorale under the direction of Dr. Guy Webb. After college, I pursued a teaching career in Birmingham, AL where I taught private voice and piano lessons to 30-40 students a week as well as coaching group classes and rock bands for competition. I believe in positive affirmation and goal setting. My goal with all students is that they enjoy learning, become self-motivated to practice, and consider their musical abilities as a gift which they can choose to share with others whenever they feel comfortable to do so. I have experience using a variety of method books and can easily recommend appropriate materials. I also encourage students to share with me and allow me to help them learn their favorite music, as well, even if that involves writing it out with or for them. Read More
Instruments: Piano Voice
I started singing professionally at age 15. Through the years I have taught both private voice and piano lessons. I have also taught at Elbert County Charter School grades kindergarten through the 8th grade in general music education. I have served as the minister of music at St Paul's Methodist Church in Burlington NC, Aurora First Presbyterian Church in Aurora Colorado and at Providence Presbyterian in Parker Colorado. I am currently serving as the praise team music assistant for Our Savior's Church in Lakewood Colorado Read More
Instruments: Cello
One of my favorite parts about teaching is that oftentimes I learn just as much as the student in the teaching process. For beginner students, I start by working through Hal Leonard's Essential Elements book one for cello. After completing this book of fundamentals, I have the student work through Suzuki books 1-5. Alongside the Suzuki books, I also make sure the student has pieces they can learn for fun. Read More
