I’ve taught students ages 3 to 77, and have found that at every age, the discovery of how music can communicate and connect people is richly rewarding. I begin with a crash course in music fundamentals to give students a classical understanding of their playing, reading, and writing techniques. Next, I teach them scales, chords, and playing techniques that correlate with their level of playing and music comprehension. I keep an open mind to switching things up if and idea isn't clicking, because the student and their love for music is what I care about most. For a long time I did not want to teach. I thought that those who can't do, teach- as the saying goes. As a father of a young boy few things give me more joy than to see my son learn about music, and Drums/Percussion in particular. As a musician I taught many musicians music theory; from diatonic scales/circle of fifths to pitch clusters and counterpoint.
