I began teaching music in high school, a friend coworker had a son that wanted to learn trumpet and it was a fun way to make money. As I continued into college, I learned that I was able to give lessons to members of the band or choir as an employee to the Adrian College Academic Services Department and I was happy to do so. I also had some lessons with Myron Bloom of the Cleveland Orchestra. In the Southfield Symphony Orchestra, I performed next to Bryan Kennedy of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra as 2nd horn on the Maurice Ravel Mother Goose Suite. Progressive Steps to Syncopation by Ted Reed, Stick Control for the Snare Drummer by George Lawrence, and Advanced Techniques for the Modern Drummer by Jim Chapin. I like to teach fundamentals first, providing a strong basis with which to expand your repetoire. Then I like to emphasize song work. The best part of drumming in my opinion is playing with other instruments, and in addition to playing with recorded music, I encourage my students to find other musicians to practice and even perform with. Young children get excited about games and movements easily, thus, I will include a lot of music interactive activities and games in my lesson to motivate their music learning. Furthermore, I believe that teaching must match to the students learning style, not learning match to the teachers teaching style. Therefore, teaching style, curriculum, and approach should be flexible, varied, and individual. After high school, I embarked on a collegiate musical journey, which led me to stays at Columbia College in Chicago, Bowling Green State University (where I received a full tuition scholarship) and Wayne State University.
