It all started when I took my first drum lesson in the 4th grade. From then on, I wanted to play whenever I could. I played in all my school bands from middle school to high school. Graduated Southern University, home of the world famous "Human Jukebox" which I was a member of for 3 years, as well as playing for my church since I was 13. For beginner students, i typically like to work with the tried and true Suzuki books, as well as theory practice with Essential Elements for violin, and the Faber books for pianists. I will begin to introduce solo work as skills build, but we will always be working on something that the student genuinely is interested in. For adults/ intermediate or advanced students i try to find what the student is interested in and guide my instruction accordingly to keep lessons fun and engaging while also slightly challenging to further understanding of technical abilities. I believe the process of learning involves a step-by-step building of knowledge and skill, reinforcing previous accomplishments in order to be prepared for new developments. Therefore I create a plan for each lesson with specific goals of student achievement. At times however, even the most carefully prepared lesson can evolve into unexpected pathways. For beginning students between ages 3 and 6 I use Progressive Piano Method for the young beginner. Older beginners are given options based on their age, ability and goals. I have testing materials available for those who are interested. When I taught international students at Brook Mays, I learned many different techniques for young beginners.
